About
James Brown has served as Montana’s state auditor and commissioner of securities and insurance since January 2025. While campaigning for the position in 2024, he signed a State Auditor’s Office registration log using the name Peter Parker (Spider-Man’s alias), a move his Democratic opponent called “hypocritical” for anyone running to lead the state agency charged with fraud prevention.
From 2021–24, Brown served as a member of the Montana Public Service Commission, most recently as president. In 2022, he lost his bid for a seat on the Montana Supreme Court.
Earlier in his career, Brown served as legal counsel for the Montana GOP and operated his own private law practice. He also served as counsel for the dark money group Western Tradition Partnership when it was found guilty of violating state campaign laws in 2013.
Brown holds a BA in political science and history from the University of Montana at Missoula, an LLM in tax law from the University of Washington at Seattle, and a JD from Seattle University School of Law.
