Richard Sattgast

About

Richard Sattgast has served as South Dakota’s state auditor since 2019 and is next up for reelection in 2026 if he decides to run for a third term.  He previously held the same position from 2003–11 before shifting office to serve as state treasurer from 2011–19.

Prior to running for public office, Sattgast served in the military for 20 years, and shortly after returning home from duty in Desert Storm, he volunteered to help President Bush win reelection in 1992. He also worked in an unelected position in the secretary of state’s office and was involved in the South Dakota state legislature as both a legislative intern and a lobbyist intern.

Sattgast holds a BS in Political Science from South Dakota’s Black Hills State University and an MPA in Public Affairs, Political and Governmental Processes from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas.
