Glenn Hegar

About

Glenn Hegar has served as comptroller of public accounts in Texas since 2015 and is next up for reelection in 2026. In that role, he is the state’s CFO, meaning that he serves as “treasurer, check writer, tax collector, procurement officer, and revenue estimator… for the world’s ninth-largest economy.” 

Prior to being elected comptroller, Hegar served in the Texas State Senate from 2007–14. During that time, he was a member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the right-wing corporate bill-mill, through August 2012.

Hegar holds a BA in Political Science and History from Texas A&M University, an MA in International Economic Relations as well as a JD from St. Mary’s University, and a Master of Law in Agricultural Law from the University of Arkansas.

A sixth-generation Texan, Hegar farms land that has been in his family since the mid 19th century.

  • Signed an SFOF letter opposing the FDIC proposed principles on climate-related financial risk management for large financial institutions (6/3/22)
  • Signed a comment letter to the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board regarding ESG practices in the municipal securities market (3/8/22)
  • Signed a letter to the banking industry warning that state financial officers “will be taking collective action in response to the ongoing and growing economic boycott of traditional energy production industries by U.S. financial institutions” (11/22/21)
