John Fleming

About

John Fleming was sworn in as Louisiana’s state treasurer in January 2024 after being elected in November 2023 with endorsements from former President Trump, current House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), and U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), among other right-wing politicians.

Fleming is a former four-term congressman who represented Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District around Shreveport in the U.S. House from 2009–17. During his tenure, he helped found the far-right House Freedom Caucus along with Jordan, now Florida Governor Ron DeSantis,  and Trump’s last Chief of Staff Mark Meadows

After leaving Congress for a failed bid for the Senate in 2016, Fleming joined the Trump administration and served in three positions: deputy assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services (2017–19), assistant secretary of Commerce for economic development (Senate-confirmed in 2019), and deputy chief of staff (2020).

Fleming has stated that he plans to follow the same anti-ESG path initiated by his predecessor John Schroder, according to the Louisiana Illuminator.

Before entering politics, Fleming worked as a physician. He joined and served in the Navy in order to finance his education and earn both a BS and an MD from the University of Mississippi.
